Faun
Choreography: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
Music: Claude Debussy
Additional music: Nitin Sawhney
Created in 2009
Duration: 16 min
Faun refers to Vaslav Nijinsky’s mythical choreography based on the music of Claude Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui created his Faun at the request of Sadler’s Wells in London in 2009. He asked the composer Nitin Sawhney to intersperse Debussy’s music with his own musical language: the music glides almost unnoticed from one style, culture and century to another. Hussein Chalayan’s costumes are at once natural, organic, and synthetic: the characters are as much eternal archetypes as they are creatures of today.
Press talks about it
”Cherkaoui’s faun and nymph, at once childlike and archaic, wild and instinctive, are impregnated here with a recomposed music that leads surreptitiously from one style to another, from one culture to another, from one century to another.”
