Ruß – Eine Geschichte von Aschenputtel

Choreography: Bridget Breiner
Music: Johann Strauss (son), Woody Guthrie, Nina Simone and others
Created in 2013
Duration: 105 min

This piece is based on the classical story of Cinderella, but is presented from the point of view of Livia, one of her stepsisters. The change of perspective gives us a more complex, but also more human reading of the tale. In Bridget Breiner’s version, the prince is not a knight in white armour but a son of the local business tycoon.
Aesthetically, the American mining tradition of the 1940’s is mixed with a retrospective of the German coal mining era in the Ruhr region. In this way, Bridget Breiner links her own origins to her previous workplace in Germany.

Press talks about it

”Bridget Breiner has achieved an interesting reinterpretation of this well-known fairy tale. And she succeeds impressively in combining classical ballet with modern elements in a way that is flowing and relevant in terms of content.”
