His ballets all spring from a close encounter with a composer, a face to face between creatives across ages, over distances and especially beyond words&#8230; In this new programme, Thierry Malandain invites three \u00abfellow travellers\u00bb, three eminent figures of French music betwixt romanticism, impressionism and modernity. Each, in his own era and style, has encompassed a constant search for balance between tradition and innovation &#8211; Saint- Sa\u00ebns and Ravel are known for their scholarly and innovative orchestrations, while Poulenc often combined the simplicity of popular melodies with modern and bold harmonies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Midi-Minuit (Noon-Midnight)<\/em> encapsulates three decades of creation by Thierry Malandain: <em>Midi pile (High Noon) or the <\/em><em>Concerto du Soleil (Sun Concerto)<\/em>, a recreation of a ballet first produced in 1995 accompanied by Francis Poulenc\u2019s <em>Concerto for Two Pianos in D minor,<\/em> a new creation entitled <em>Minuit et Demi (Half Past Midnight), or Le Coeur Myst\u00e9rieux (The Mysterious <\/em><em>Heart)<\/em> accompanied by Camille Saint-Sa\u00ebns\u2019 melodies, and lastly Maurice Ravel\u2019s timeless <em>Bol\u00e9ro<\/em>. These three pieces, written for dance ensembles, pay tribute to this famous French school, elegant and refined, with subtle orchestrations giving centre stage to the melody\u2019s expressiveness, and which continues to be influential to this day.
