Pastoral

Choreography: Thierry Malandain
Music: Ludwig Van Beethoven
Set and costume design: Jorge Gallardo
Costume making: Véronique Murat
Set production: Frédéric Vadé
Lighting: François Menou
Created in 2019
Duration: 70 min

For this ballet created on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth and entitled Pastoral, music is, as often, Thierry Malandain’s main source of inspiration. The choreography ensues directly from the composer’s intentions, emotions and feelings experienced while listening to the music. In doing so, Malandain makes it a point of honour to remain as faithful as possible to the musical scores and to their structure, limiting the use of artifice. As usual, the scenography is sober to give priority to this timeless choreographic writing that seeks to exalt the power of the dancing body, the sensuality and humanity of the company’s twenty-two dancers.

Press talks about it

“As an echo to Beethoven’s ageless work, Malandain produces a rich and universal Pastoral, deliberately disconnected from a particular context and topicality, around the theme of harmony and beauty.”
