In The Mass Ornament, Spanish choreographer Fran Díaz draws inspiration from an essay by Siegfried Kracauer (1963), a philosopher associated with the Frankfurt School. In this text, Kracauer analyzes the rationalization of bodies in mass productions, using the 1920s Tiller Girls as an example. Díaz brings this concept into the present through a choreography structured in three parts, marked by precision, collective awareness, and exhaustion. Set to powerful music by Górecki and Tom Foskett-Barnes, the piece explores the sacrifice of the individual for the sake of the group. Despite the push toward uniformity, a simple kiss stands as a symbol of human resistance.
