IT Dansa is a young dance company integrated into the postgraduate curriculum of the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona. Comprised of 18 talented international dancers selected through auditions, IT Dansa provides a two-year scholarship program. This opportunity enables dancers to hone their skills under the guidance of world-class teachers and choreographers, and to showcase their talents across an extensive network of theaters and festivals.
The program acts as a powerful launching pad, propelling the majority of these emerging artists into careers with professional dance companies. IT Dansa has developed over forty pieces to date, featuring both up-and-coming talents and esteemed choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, Rui Horta, Alexander Ekman and Akram Khan.
Under the leadership of Catherine Allard, former dancer of the Nederlands Dans Theater and soloist with Nacho Duato, IT Dansa has flourished since its inception in 1997. Catherine’s leadership is particularly noted for her focus on nurturing the unique personality of each dancer, transforming them into compelling, multifaceted performers.
Over recent seasons, IT Dansa has captivated audiences throughout Europe with its tours, earning widespread acclaim from both the public and dance professionals. Today, IT Dansa is recognized as a pivotal platform for young, aspiring dancers on the international stage.
Season highlights
The 2024-2025 season of IT Dansa introduces two original works. The first, Biterna, choreographed by Aleix Martínez from Spain, was presented on July 27, 2024, marking the opening of the 33rd Dansàneu festival in the Pyrenees. The second piece, Romancero Gitano, choreographed by José Maldonado, draws inspiration from the poem of the same name by Federico García Lorca, first published in 1928.
In December 2024, IT Dansa will stage Biterna at the Barcelona Provincial Council, followed by a tour across various locations in 2025. The company is set to perform in France and Germany, presenting pieces including Kaash, Lo Que No Se Ve, Minus 16, and Biterna.
Additionally, a combined program featuring Biterna and Minus 16 will be highlighted in the Dansa Compartida educational series in March 2025 at the Teatre Ovidi Montllor in Barcelona.
