IT Dansa

Artistic director: Catherine Allard

IT Dansa is a young dance company within the Theatre Institute’s postgraduate dance course in Barcelona. and composed of 18 young and talented international dancers. Selected during auditions, they receive a two-year grant that allows them to work with some of the best teachers and choreographers. They also perform throughout a vast network of theatres and festivals.
This training program is an exceptional springboard allowing for most of these young dancers to directly join the ranks of professional dance companies. So far, IT Dansa has premiered over thirty pieces from emerging talents and from renowned choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, Rui Horta, Alexander Ekman, Ramon Oller, to name but a few.
After a career in dance at the Nederlands Dans Theater, Nacho Duato’s long-time muse Catherine Allard has been directing the company since its foundation in 1997. Taking into account the fact that each of the young dancers in the Institute has received excellent training, her pedagogical project focuses on developing their own personality so that they become true performers.
For several seasons now, IT Dansa has been travelling the roads in Europe and has met with great success with the public and professionals. Today, it is recognised as a major company of young dancers.

Season highlights

After a particularly moving 25th anniversary celebrated at the Grec Festival in Barcelona in July 2023, IT Dansa will return to European stages from January to June 2024, with a programme featuring works by Ohad Naharin, Akram Khan, Cayetano Soto and Gustavo Ramírez Sansano.

Renowned for its teaching excellence and the diversity of its repertoire, this year the company is planning workshops with artists from different backgrounds: Aleix Martinez, dancer and choreographer for the Hamburg Ballet, José Maldonado, flamenco choreographer, and Eulàlia Ayguadé, contemporary choreographer and former dancer with Akram Khan, Hofesh Shechter and La Veronal. Each of these workshops could lead to a period of creation in order to add new pieces to the IT Dansa repertoire.

Press talks about it

“Fun, exciting, diversified. IT Dansa embodies what Picasso called ‘the Andalusian eye’ with every gesture, every step. Pure eroticism.”

Richard Peter, Schaumburger Zeitung

“The result lives up to the promises of the company with a typical European choreographic technique, very smooth, even during energetic moments where we can feel a restraint on the physique. All in all, you get a natural academic trend for an astonishing ensemble.”
