Anima Obscura

In her inaugural production as Artistic Director of Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Nanine Linning explores the timeless dream of eternal life. Anima Obscura delves into the quest for immortality through various epochs of European culture, from the Renaissance to a futuristic post-human era where technological advancements surpass human capacities, leading to a blurred line between humanity and machinery.

This cross-disciplinary work combines choreography with a rich visual landscape of videos and holograms, where cutting-edge digital technologies transform the expressive power of dance into an avant-garde, sensuous theatrical experience.

The choreographer, both enchanted and troubled by the current pace of technological advancement, engages her audience in a critical examination of the social implications of biotechnology. Through her interactions with artists, scientists, and philosophers, she probes the future hybrid conditions of humanity.
