LEGACY is a meditation on lineage, memory, and the unseen forces that shape who we are, featuring choreography by Alonzo King and an original score by Grammy Award-winning musician, bassist, and vocalist esperanza spalding.
In LEGACY, King’s movement language is inseparable from spalding’s richly textured score, each shaping and revealing the other. About the score, which was created in collaboration with King and the LINES dancers, spalding says, “…[the] music—born while sitting at the feet (literally!) of the phenomenal artists, dancers, dreamers, and lineage bearers comprising LINES Ballet—brought new depth of meaning and coherency to the initial composition in ways I could never have imagined on my own.”
Upon its premiere in April 2026, the San Francisco Chronicle hailed LEGACY as “a rare kind of magic…that leaves a sense of compositional just-rightness,” while Critical Dance described the dancers of LINES Ballet as “technically astonishing” with “an air of exquisite elegance.”
Intimate yet expansive, LEGACY offers audiences a deeply human experience of connection, continuity, and home.

Mesmerized by Coltrane’s music since he was a child, King pays tribute to the legendary spiritual leader, composer, pianist, and harpist Alice Coltrane.
