King has been mesmerized by Coltrane’s music since he was a child — he choreographed one of his very first pieces to her work. He now returns to her body of work to create a ballet as part of “The Year of Alice,” a nation wide tribute to her legacy that includes performances and exhibits by LINES Ballet, Impulse! Records, and Hammer Museum, among others.
“Her musical and spiritual journey helped define and shape a life and an entire musical genre,” says Grammy nominated harpist and composer Brandee Younger.
Created as part of the company’s Fall 2024 season, the piece pays tribute to the legendary spiritual leader, composer, pianist, and harpist Alice Coltrane.
Press talks about it
« King’s full-company Ode to Alice Coltrane pays resounding tribute to the genius, the range of Coltrane’s gifts and imagination […] The Lines artists, swathed in silver and gold dashed glowing mist, embraced lifts and leaps, pas des deux and ensembles, gorgeous adagios and virtuosic folk derived steps […] Call this ode fantasy, or enhanced reality, or a testament to the power of work that comes from creative inspiration. Or just call it stunning.»
